Allereerst complimenten met een prachtige site! Je komt op mij integer over, dat maakt de site goed leesbaar. Leuk om je bekeringsverhaal te lezen. Zelf heb ik precies de tegenovergestelde weg gevolgd, en ook dat heb ik ervaren (dat doe ik overigens nog steeds) als diepe vrijheid.

Je zegt dat je de Bijbel niet serieus neemt cq kunt nemen. Op welke zaken fundeer je deze stelling? Denk je bijv dat Jezus een historische figuur was?

Beste Bart,

Bedankt voor je complimenten! Ik neem de Bijbel alleen niet serieus als openbaring Gods. Al literair werk ligt het me echter na aan het hart. Ik zie in de Bijbel niets dat wijst op een goddelijke inspiratie, maar wel veel dat wijst op menselijke inspiratie.

Ik denk dat Jezus een historische figuur is geweest in de zin van een apocalyptische profeet die leefde rond het begin van onze jaartelling, de nodige onrust heeft veroorzaakt en daarom door de Romeinse overheersers ter dood gebracht is. Zie verder Bart Erhmans standaarwerk The New Testament: A Historical Introduction to the Early Christian Writings (Oxford UP, 2007). Ik denk dat je op historische gronden niet veel meer dan dat kunt zeggen. Het grote probleem is dat er geen buiten-Bijbelse bronnen zijn uit die tijd die over hem schrijven. Dat is op z’n minst opmerkelijk als hij werkelijk de wonderbaarlijke figuur is geweest die hij volgens de christelijke traditie is. Het enige wat we hebben zijn de nieuwtestamentische bronnen, en die zijn om meerdere redenen onbetrouwbaar als geschiedschrijving.
