De Bijbel zit vol raadselachtige passages. De teksten zijn in een cultuur ontstaan die ver van de onze ligt, zowel in tijd, plaats, taal als wereldbeeld. Daar komt nog bij dat vertalen soms lastig is omdat de grammaticale constructies niet duidelijk zijn, we niet weten wat woorden (precies) betekenen of woorden en zinnen dubbelzinnig zijn. Vertalingen lopen dan (sterk) uiteen. Ook verschillen de manuscripten soms en weten we niet wat de oorspronkelijke tekst was. Dit alles maakt dat het gissen blijft naar de betekenis van sommige passages. Een voorbeeld van zo’n problematische passage is de beschrijving van Behemot en Leviathan in het boek Job.
