Er zijn waarschijnlijk maar weinig hoofdstukken uit de Bijbel zo veel besproken zijn als het eerste van Genesis, de Bijbelse ouverture. Vooral het eerste vers, traditioneel vertaald als “In het begin schiep God de hemel en de aarde” is vrijwel iedereen bekend. Toch is er ook veel misverstand over het eerste hoofdstuk van de Schrift. Veel ongelovigen doen het af als een sprookje, door de wetenschap weerlegd en dus van generlei waarde meer. Sommige orthodoxe gelovigen (creationisten) proberen de tekst te passen binnen het moderne, wetenschappelijke wereldbeeld, wat tot een absurde lezing van bepaalde passages leidt. Beide opvattingen miskennen mijns inziens de literaire waarde van de tekst. Met deze vertaling en exegese wil ik proberen uit te leggen waarom.
